Huruma Family -
By: Mama Zipporah

June was a very interesting month for us because we thought it will be a cold one but some days have been very hot! I wonder whether it has anything to do with the depletion of the ozone layer! Being the sixth month of the year, it has it own challenges too because of the ever rising prices of food. In Huruma it has really been a miracle story and a hand of God’s providence because at the end of May, we received a container full of food from World Emergency relief agency. The food also benefited other 20 children’s home and families in the slums of Mathare Ngong where my ministry started 25 years ago.

The Bible says that everything works for good for those who love Jesus.. When we lost our van it was a hard time for us especially picking up children from the slums who come to our school every morning. We are full of gratitude and happiness when we tell you that God provided a very nice Toyota van! It takes the children to and from school every day. Also the van is used to take our HIV children to their monthly hospital check-ups.

I can say we have seen God promoting our home in various ways:

  • The Coca-Cola company staff in the financial department visited our home and helped us plant two hundred seedlings from various types of trees. I thank Michael a forester from Canada who came four years ago and showed us how to plant and trees and even start own tree nursery.
  • One of the great friends of the home came to celebrate her birthday at the home. It was so exciting because we all had a fabulous time I and my children as well as all the friends who came with her. There were jumping castles, face painting and we danced our hearts out!! In the evening, we had dinner together in our dining hall and later cut the birthday cake.
  • Among our volunteers we were able to host Cucu (Grandmother) Moraine, Justine, Broke and Jasmine.  For the first time they ate from my small sitting room with me and they loved it.  Moraine was darning the cloths and teaching too while Justine was teaching music and creative arts in school.
  • Many people also donated lots of clothing in terms of jumpers and pullovers because of the cold weather.

Amidst all, we were still preparing for the group of 29 volunteers from Cornerstone Church in Arizona Chandler, who were coming in July. For more news on the amazing work they did in Huruma please check out the July issue. Surely God has been our provider and strength and we thank each and every one of you for your awesome support and know that out father in heaven will surely bless you for your awesome support. God bless and have a blessed July.

Counseling Report
By: Sis Monicah

Individual and group counseling continued an exercise done always in the home. The target group this time was the senior group ranging from ages 14yrs and above. I and the youth covered the topic on dealing with relationships. A sub-topic under this topic was ‘Discovering Myself’.

We tried to answer the question ‘What kind of a person am I?’ This question helped us discuss what happens in our lives when we reach puberty. It opened a discussion on body changes that comes along with attraction to the opposite sex.

We have been discussing this in length and discovered that this is a change that happens to all of us and leads us to relationships with the opposite sex. I assisted the youths to discover that God created us in His own image and He will help us deal with our feelings and make right decisions when it comes to these relationship issues.

Towards the end of the month we had agreed that there is what we call a healthy relationship and a dangerous relationship as far as youth is concerned. We did some case studies on this issue and we agreed to continue on the same next month in regards to how far we should go and still have a healthy relationship.

Our leading Bible book on this topic was Ephesians 5:15-17 that says, Be very careful then how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Our major concern was if we are obedient to the word of God as long as our relationships are concerned.

May the Lord bless you, big time!

Home School Report
By: Mr. Kwaka

The school is doing well since this term every child was equipped with text book so now teachers do not have problem. We are still organizing the Library thanks to  Rotary club of America who donated 20,000 books .  Because of those books we have been working to see that we have a library which we want to open to the surrounding schools for children to come and read in later days.

Were also so happy for the on coming computer lab which is our dream and the connection of internet to the school so that we can be connected to the world.  We still have to pray for the protection of the computers so before they are put in place we need to secure the room where they will be kept.

We want to thank God for the water tank which has been a great help thanks to Standard chartered Bank of Kenya who donated and put gutters around the roof.  Still mum dream is that we should have an underground tank which will store the water collected. from the roof.  But for now we thank God for the tank

All ready we benefited from the on coming dormitories because of the building dirt to fill the dormitories we have now a very big tank which can hold more than 300 cubic liters of water.  We are praying that God will provide Ksh. 500,000 for building the underground tank and pay labour.

Continue to pray for mum and the children too.  She is trying.

Gospel Dancers
The Gospel dancers are still dancing although this time around we have choose other 20 new gospels dancers who we looking forward to Calorie coming so that she can train them during this time when she is on Summer holiday.  She is a member of now Cornerstone Church in Chandler Arizona who have been a very big support and help to home especially since my husband went to be with the Lord.

 Dormitories Construction Commences Again

The dormitories construction project started last year with the help of Sabrina and her friends in Germany.  They printed Huruma 2008 calendars which raised US$ 30,000 and together with the normal donations savings of US$ 20,000, we were able to start the foundation of the dormitories because at the time the children department was accusing us of congestion, and we had to show them that we are concerned and we are doing something.

I am happy to inform the building progress is going  very well and right now we are finishing to fill in the dirt so that we can do all the foundation concrete.  It’s my prayer by  October we should be starting to build with stones.  We thank God for the continued support of Cornerstone for the dormitories  and we now have a lot of hope that soon the children will be able to occupy it.  To tell you the truth even if the Children  Department is encouraging is to try to link the children with relatives.  I can honestly say it’s very hard to them due to the deteriorating conditions where food is so scarce and one is not willing to take anyone outside his family (wife and children).

Just pray the children of Kenya they need to be rescued by God.  I thank God for the support he has given me and l will continue fighting and speaking for the right of children of which l was a victim  40 years.  My family never helped .  And everywhere l went l  was used  a  maid if its today they could have been arrested even jailed.  But l thank God for helping me out and l  want the best for my children.   Right now we are still in my house and you are welcome to come and see but we share the beds and l still think its better than sleeping in the corner of street.

God promised never to leave us, this has been so true in our church. This month we have seen the hand of God, just like any other time. We are still pressing on towards the goal, which the Lord called us to; Philippians 3:12.

We have been running the church for the last eight months since our Pastor/Dad died and for sure we have gone in to higher spiritual levels. I say ‘we’ because as the Pastor am not alone, for we have the church council, who make all the plans for the church. Also we have various church departments who work every day to make the church, just as Christ intended. Every 3rd Sunday of every month we welcome an outside pastor to come and preach, which has also helped us grow more and more. We also have the members of the church council preach at different times. This makes us grow and learn more when we sit down and have others teach/preach to us.

We are hoping that the church will be going to higher levels with time, as we allow the Trinity to have the ways in the church. We are having a group from Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, Chandler, Arizona, U.S.A. who will be visiting with us for a month from the 5th July 09 to end of August 09. We are praying that this will make our church grow more and more as well as have a great fellowship together. We are having young kids camp on the 13th to 15th July 09, which is meant to make the kids learn more about God. Later we shall have a youth camp in August 09, which serves the same purpose.

Am thanking God for all He is doing and all He is planning to do, for He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Together in God’s fellowship.

The blessings of the lord are new every morning and we are happy to bring to your attention the news of the month of June presented to you by the home department. We feel honored by the Lord almighty for taking care of us through out the month and now we can count our blessings and say the Lord has surely replaced anything that we had lost in the past.

My sincere heartfelt gratitude goes to our Kenyan donors who have continually stood with us in times of difficulties and are always there to offer a shoulder to cry on. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Coca-Cola Company who devoted a whole day planting trees with us and later donated a lot of foodstuff to the home. Many thanks and Gods blessings to all of you. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surround you both now and for ever more and we pray that God will do you good because you are also good to other people and upright in heart when giving especially to the children who are weak and needy. Blessings unto you.

We have much to say about this month because God has done great things in our  lives not forgetting our volunteers from all over the world who made sure that they gave their precious time to the children and we appreciate their non-financial support and May the lord almighty give you the strength and the heart to carry on.
Special thanks to Justin from Canada and Maureen from England, who stayed in the home for the whole of June and who devoted their time interacting and getting to know the children.

As the singer sung that we have an anchor that keeps our souls we have a true testimony that the lord has fastened us to the rock that cannot move and we are still confident that we shall continue seeing the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Before I conclude, we love and pray for all those though not mentioned are our prayer warriors and who have always prayed for our home and we have seen the hand of the lord. For those who gave material support and their finances, may God extend the heart you have for defending the rights of the poor and the fatherless.

Home Health News
By: Nurse Mary

The health clinic has continued to offer great services to the children who are able to access medical health care when need arise. There has been no major health issue in the home and the minor cases were treated in the home clinic. The HIV cases continued to follow up with their clinic monthly check-ups for counseling and obtaining their ARV drugs which are later organized in their daily intake organizers, which becomes easier for them when taking. I also make sure the drugs are taken at the right time and no defaulting. They are also weighed on monthly basis and encouraged on proper feeding.  Drug withdrawal has not been reported among our HIV positive children and none has experienced opportunistic infections and we thank the Lord for care and protection he has offered to our children. Generally, the health status of our children is satisfactory and we appreciate the fact that they have not lacked food at this time of food crisis in our country Kenya. More so, the oat meal which is very nutritious has also boosted their health.

I been in charge of the clinic together with the entire management highly appreciate donors who have continually supported the home clinic by supplying it with facility equipment and drugs. May the Lord almighty bless you and bless the work of your hands. Thanks also to those who devote their time and resources and assist us in the clinic, by monitoring the children’s health. Special thanks to Dr. Robin, Dr. Johnson and Kay Johnson and the entire staff of Lea Toto Clinic who have been supplying us with drugs for the clinic. It is such a blessing and may the Lord almighty give you the desire of your heart as you continue serving in the children’s Ministry.

A Vote of Thanks from Mama Zipporah

I want to thank you so much for being our friend.  Thanks for praying for me and my children.  Now l feel a bit strong.  And l am facing life.  My tears a drying and now l facing life as widow with a big responsibility.  I am happy that for the short life God him, he made sure that he left us all comfortable and the work continuing.  I will ever never forget him.  Nobody can take his place only Jesus who says he is the husband to widows of whom l am now.  Continue to pray for me for health and sanity so that l can lead the children in Godly way and raise them to what God want them to be.   I am so happy of each one you have prayed and stood with me materially and morally.  May God bless you so much and let me let you know you means so much to us.  May God bless you.  Mama Zipporah.

Conclusion by the Administrator
Sialo Catherine

June has been a wonderful and great month for all of us here in the home.  The children have just completed their second month of school for the term and they are really studying hard and doing well in their studies. This is also the month where our grade eight kids are doing their assessments tests that help them prepare for the final examination that comes each end of year, which enables them to go to the next level of their education.  As you pray remember these kids in your prayers so that each and every one of them can join a great high school at the end of this level, this been one of the pathways to achieving their goals and dreams in the future.  The rest of the children are all doing well in their various classes and have just embarked in their last month of the school term.

I want to thank all our volunteers from all over the world who have dedicatedly offered to come and help Mama in her work. For the month of June we had Justin Anantawan from Canada and Maureen Hewitt from England. Remember that your contribution is priceless and thanks for all the sacrifices you make. Words cannot express the joy and gratitude in our hearts for the enormous effort you have made in prayer and kind, to make our dreams come true. We pray that the almighty God will bless you and may he guide you through all your endeavors. I would also like to take this moment and thank all our friends and partners all around the world for the support you have given us through prayers and donations in kind and cash. For pictures please visit our website.

May the Almighty God bless you in such a mighty way.
