In order to accommodate the growing need of the children, as well as offer them the best education and facilities possible in order to achieve the mission, Huruma Children's Home embarked on the construction of an education centre. The school has been teamwork between Huruma Children's Home and our partners and friends. The total projected cost of the education centre is Ksh. 32,792,980 (around US$ 410,000). The project was initiated by Godfrey Smith, of the Isle of Man, British Islands, while attending his daughters wedding in Kenya on July 2nd 2000 visited the home and, he was highly touched by the current state of facilities at our home. He donated 25% of the project cost. On 24th March 2001, Evangelist Teresia Wairimu, of Faith Evangelistic Ministries, came to the home for the ‘ground breaking’ ceremony, and the project effectively got under way. The Managing Director of ‘Mentor Management’, who in the first place came up with the idea of producing architectural plans for a good permanent structure, has contributed Ksh. 3,000,000 worth of his work by designing and providing technical supervision of the school project. Later, individual well wishers and companies have come in and donated money that has helped purchase of building material, payment of labor and school facilities like desks, chairs. The new facility is still under construction but it is on the last phase and it includes 11 classrooms, a dining hall, computer room, library, toilets, conference room and an administrative block. This facility has enabled Huruma Children's Home, to offer a positive educational and recreational environment for the Huruma children as well as the surrounding community. The larger space will allow for increased enrollment, and future plans include expansion for a secondary education and a technical school. It includes a soccer field which doubles up as a volleyball pitch and a small basket ball court. There is also a nice playground, which was donated as a Christmas gift by friends of the home. Our future projection is that after all the major constructions are finished, we would construct a swimming pool, as an additional recreational facility for the children. |
